Health Clinics for Marginalized Communities

Improving Maternal Health & Combating FGM in Marginalized Communities

At WeManafsi, we work with Somali and Maasai communities in Kenya to improve access to safe maternal healthcare and combat harmful practices like FGM. Our clinics provide culturally sensitive care, education, and support to protect women’s health and dignity.

Key Focus Areas:

✅ Safe Maternity Care – Skilled birth attendants, prenatal & postnatal care.

✅ FGM Prevention & Support – Counseling, medical care for survivors, and community education.

✅ Community Outreach – Working with elders, religious leaders, and youth to shift norms.

Challenges in These Communities:

High maternal & infant mortality due to limited healthcare access.

FGM prevalence leading to complications in childbirth.

Cultural barriers preventing women from seeking medical help.

How We Help:

Mobile clinics in remote areas.

Training traditional birth attendants (TBAs) on safe deliveries.

Partnerships with local leaders to end FGM.

Maternal Health & FGM Prevention in the Somali Community

Key Issues:

High FGM rates (over 90% in some areas).

Early marriages leading to teen pregnancies.

Limited health facilities in arid regions.

Our Approach:

✔ Mobile Clinics – Bringing doctors & midwives to remote villages.

✔ Islamic Scholars’ Engagement – Religious leaders advocating against FGM.

✔ Girls’ Education Programs – Keeping girls in school reduces FGM risks.

Success Stories:

"Amina, a 16-year-old from Garissa, avoided FGM after our community dialogue. She’s now in school and an advocate for change."

Ending FGM & Improving Maternal Care in Maasai Communities

Key Issues:

FGM as a rite of passage – Linked to marriageability.

Home births with untrained TBAs – High risk of complications.

Long distances to hospitals – Women deliver without emergency care.

Our Approach:

✔ Alternative Rites of Passage (ARP) – Celebrating girls without cutting.

✔ Community Health Workers – Training Maasai women as birth attendants.

✔ Men’s Involvement – Educating fathers/husbands on dangers of FGM.

Success Stories:

"After our workshops, a Maasai elder declared his village ‘FGM-free’ and encouraged hospital deliveries."
